Who should go on a Grand Canyon Youth river trip?
GCY is open to any young person age 12 to 19 years old with a desire to discover the educational power of the river. Participants come from all walks of life and from different cultures, economic backgrounds, and physical abilities. You don’t need to be athletic, outdoorsy, or outgoing to enjoy this experience; you just need a sense of adventure and curiosity… and a willingness to give back to your community and be part of a team.
What if I have no previous rafting or camping experience?
No problem! GCY trips are a great introduction to life outdoors and on the river. You’ll learn the basics — packing your dry bag, cooking, and even rowing a boat! Before you arrive at the river, you will have the opportunity to ask questions, however small or goofy. Once on the river, the guides and Trip Coordinators share their knowledge and show you the ropes.
Where do GCY participants come from?
Young people join us from across the U.S. and other parts of the world. Some are from big cities like Boston or Chicago and others are from small towns like Tuba City on the Navajo Nation. Some groups come with their school; other individual students come on their own or with a friend.
